Overview

This work is a limited-edition silkscreen print embodying the artist’s original artistic theory, “Grid Animism.” It extracts the preliminary sketches (the genesis of thought) of a wood sculpture—the conceptual source of this theory—into a planar space through the technique of silkscreen printing.

Concept — Grid Animism

The geometric “structure (grid),” a symbol of modern rationalism, is redefined not as a wall that excludes nature, but as a “vessel of resonance (sanctuary)” that purifies and amplifies unseen presences and the energy of life (animism).

Rather than blending or compromising the two principles of the grid and animism, this practice embodies a “contemporary syncretism” where both maintain their distinct differences while circulating and coexisting within a single body.

Materiality

The defining logical characteristic of this work lies in the selection of “Bone Black” as the printing ink.

The Black of the Print: A black pigment produced by high-temperature carbonization of animal bones in an oxygen-free environment. Its primary component is calcium phosphate (bone).
The White of the Sculpture: “Gofun,” the traditional pigment that forms the skin of the three-dimensional works, is weathered and pulverized seashell (calcium carbonate).

Through this material identity of “calcium,” the planar “black” and the volumetric “white” are chemically and conceptually linked. The remnants of a skeletal framework that once sustained life (calcium) are fixed onto another material—paper or wood—as printing ink or sculptural skin, beginning to breathe once more. This is not merely a presentation of a visual schema, but a ritualistic process of the “circulation of life” mediated by matter imbued with the memory of death.
