CERES Säule in the Cage 2 stands as a pivotal “Ichiboku-zukuri” (single-block wood sculpture) in my practice, serving as a critical juncture, both formally and materially, in my ongoing exploration of “Grid Animism”—the synthesis of geometric order and natural vitality. The linear outer frame (the “Cage”) acts as a rigid architecture, representing human reason as it seeks to measure and isolate the natural world. Conversely, the six spheres and voids suspended vertically within (CERES, the symbol of fertility and life) embody an organic energy striving to grow from the earth toward the heavens. While these two structures appear distinct and assembled, they are an “Indivisible Body,” carved entirely from a single block of camphor wood. The work manifests the mechanics of “Grid Animism,” wherein the imposition of geometric constraints paradoxically amplifies the vital force of the wood that resists them. This piece marks a significant transitional moment in my material practice, created on the eve of my complete shift toward traditional natural materials such as nikawa (animal glue). While synthetic binders such as acrylics were utilized in this work, the surface is meticulously coated with Gofun—a traditional pigment made from crushed oyster shells—imbuing the form with a distinct, matte luminosity.
