This sculpture is carved from a single solid block of wood (ichiboku-zukuri), physically manifesting both a geometric “Grid” (structure) and an undulating “Animism” (life force). The rigid, linear outer frame functions as a Kekkai—a sacred boundary or sanctuary. It simultaneously confines and protects the organic mass dwelling within, which represents two forms of Ceres, the symbol of fertility. The white pigment fixed to the surface is Gofun, created from weathered seashells. Composed of calcium carbonate—the very same substance found in human bones—this white embodies the “memory of what was once alive.” Applied to the new flesh of the camphor wood, it begins to breathe once again as its skin.In this work, two inseparable principles simultaneously contend and resonate within a single body. By strictly eliminating petrochemical products such as acrylics, the sculpture intervenes in the space utilizing only natural materials.
