Through a visual experiment that inverts line and background, this 2017 drawing serves as a crucial precursor to the current philosophy of “Grid Animism.”The black areas on the surface are entirely composed of densely applied graphite, while the visible white lines and planes are the meticulously untouched negative space of the paper itself. A linear, checkerboard-like grid (representing rationality and structure) intersects with a circular accumulation of countless, entangled organic strokes (representing vitality) at its center. This composition, where “black lines and white lines” or “figure and ground” continuously invert and contend, captures the dynamic tension of two opposing principles rivaling within a single space.
